There are a lot of ways to spend a November evening, but here's one we think deserves a spot on the calendar: a book swap. Not a fancy party. Not another thing you have to shop for. Just a few people, a few books, and a good excuse to slow down.
That's the whole idea behind the Leisure Club at 222 Parkside. Your free time doesn't have to be productive, impressive, or expensive to count.
Start with the books you already own
Text a few friends, neighbors, or family members and ask each person to bring one or two books they're ready to pass along. A favorite novel, a cookbook, a mystery they couldn't put down, or even a children's book can work. You don't need everyone to like the same genre.
Have each person tuck a note inside their book: “Read this if you love…” or “My favorite thing about this one was…” It's an easy way to turn a stack of books into real recommendations.
Make the rules clear, then keep everything easy
Before everyone arrives, decide whether books are gifts to keep or loans to return. Both are great; confusion isn't. If they're loans, add the owner's name on a removable note. If they're yours to keep, let everyone know they can take one home without feeling obligated to bring something next time.
Don't worry about perfect decorations. A clear spot on the table, somewhere comfortable to sit, and whatever drink people already enjoy are plenty.
A simple 60-minute book swap
- First 10 minutes: Put the books out and let everyone browse.
- Next 15 minutes: Each person shares one quick recommendation. No book reports required.
- Next 10 minutes: Choose a book to take home, trade, or borrow.
- Last 25 minutes: Stay and chat, or try a little quiet reading together. Yes, a gathering where nobody has to keep talking can be a very good gathering.
Make room for the people who aren't readers, too
Not everyone wants a novel. Invite a friend to bring a puzzle, a magazine, a craft they're working on, or just themselves. A cozy night at home is still leisure even if you never turn a page.
If you're doing this solo, try the same idea with a library visit: pick one book you wouldn't normally choose, make a warm drink when you get home, and give yourself twenty minutes to see where it takes you.
A little something for the reading corner
We have a soft spot for bookish Christmas details, so here's one from our shop if you happen to be looking: Have Your Shelf a Merry Little Christmas | Mini Canvas. It's a finished, printed 4 × 4-inch stretched canvas with a little wooden easel, made for a shelf or reading nook. It's completely optional; the book swap works just as well with what you already have.
And if you try a book swap, we'd love to see your stack. Tag 222 Parkside in the little moments that make your week better, whether you've ever bought a thing from us or not. The Leisure Club is an open invitation.
